This Emotional Life:
In Search of
Ourselves . . . and Happiness
This spellbinding PBS series, which received
outstanding reviews,
is hosted by Harvard Psychologist, Dr. Daniel Gilbert, author of the
National
Bestseller "Stumbling on Happiness."
Each episode weaves the compelling personal
stories
of ordinary people and the latest scientific research, along with
revealing
comments from celebrities such as Chevy Chase, Larry David, Alanis
Morissette,
Robert Kennedy Jr. and Richard Gere.
Professor
Gilbert, whose research examines why people so often mispredict what
will make
them happy, says, "Science has revealed three important facts about
happiness: You can't be happy alone; you can't be happy all the time;
you can
be happier than you are. Our three shows examine each of these three
facts."
From reviewers:
"I
found this series to be totally fascinating and insightful beyond
reproach. To anyone who is either in a relationship with another, or to
someone who is simply working on finding a clear and balanced way
through this life on their own, I highly recommend it!"
"As a 22
year practitioner, there were many twists, turns and surprises I did
not expect. It is terrific for me to see this current scientifically
documented research in addition to alternative treatments that have
potential, yet have not been proven."
"By
the end, viewers will have a deeper sense of what makes us tick and
insights into how to use that information to improve their own emotional
and social well-being."

Episode 1: Happiness: Family, Friends
& Lovers
The
first episode, Family,
Friends and Lovers, shows why and how relationships are vital to
our well-being. Clearly depicted are the cognitive and neurological
processes involved in our daily interactions. Conclusions suggest why
some relationships work very well and conversely why others do not.
Presenting this, by drawing conclusions
showing real case scenarios in action, as well as inferences concluded
from the master clinicians makes this espisode/series fascinating and
unforgettable, in addition to this being a great teaching medium.

Episode 2: Happiness: Facing Our Fears
In Facing Our Fears, we examine anger, anxiety,
fear and despair, emotions usually thought of as deterrents to
happiness.
We witness several people
who maintain debilitating fears, primarily because of an understandable
unwillingness to face the fear. Ironically, however, by facing fears
under the guidance of the therapists, we see remarkable transformations
which ultimately lead to a breakthrough resumption of happiness. This
includes a current scientifically proven treatment method for PTSD.
Upon this episode's ending, the viewer
will undoubtedly feel as joyful as the courageous people in the film
feel, who have reached new heights in conquering their fears, showing
renewed joy of life.

Episode 3: Happiness: Rethinking Happiness
In
this episode, we are shown through vivid examples and proven evidence,
that often, what we think will make us happy, in fact does not. We see
what enables people to attain well-being. There are those who have
experienced long-term trauma who shockingly say, once they've come out
the other side, that their lives are better for it. We learn why, by
observing what these people do in spite of serious life-altering events,
they regain a happy life.
We also learn about the elements of happiness
itself. How it is not necessarily a constant frame of mind, for example.
It is clearly demonstrated why levels of happiness actually increase
with age, regardless of the advanced age of the participants.
Techniques are shown to us, that can be useful in
the attainment of well-being at any age, and across the full spectrum of
life's difficulties, from seemingly minor disappointments to severe
trauma.
The bottom line is that no matter who we are, we can
lead happier lives. This film demonstrates the many paths we can take
for fulfillment.
